Honoring the Legacy of the Douglas C-47 Skytrain
Placid Lassie is the Tunison Foundation's 1943 Douglas C-47 Skytrain. Unlike many warbirds operating today, she is a real war hero. She is not an replica, or a deep restoration based upon parts from multiple separate airplanes. These same rivets crossed the English Channel on June 6th, 1944 in service of our country.
Front Design:
- Bold yellow stencil-style graphic of Placid Lassie with a nose-on line drawing of the C-47
- “Placid Lassie” script front and center, with “Douglas C-47 Skytrain” printed below in military-inspired typography
Left Sleeve:
- “Idling Ada” — The port engine was titled ‘Idling Ada’, was named after the wife of Lassie's wartime crew chief, TSgt. Eddie A. Apodaca.
Right Sleeve:
- “Eager Eileen” —
When Placid Lassie flew for 74th TCS in June 1944, her starboard engine was titled ‘Eager Eileen’. Eager Eileen was Ed Tunison's wife, as Ed recounted to us in Normandy in 2014, to the slight horror of his son, who accompanied him. In tribute to her, Ed named the starboard engine on Lassie after her.
